When I think about my outlook, I believe that in general I am an optimist. Often, optimism combines with perseverance – which is a determination to succeed – when faced with setbacks. Whenever I have experienced tough times and searched inwardly for motivation, I tend to look for positives.

It’s the same in my role as a manager. If I’m in charge of a team that hasn’t performed well, or players have suffered injuries, I’ll always look for that ray of hope. I’m not being optimistic for the sake of it, and I’m always realistic, but I like to focus on what might still be achievable. Why? Because dipping into negative thoughts is simply not constructive. When things haven’t gone to plan, it stops us from considering what’s still possible. As a way of thinking, it may protect us from further grief or disappointment, but it takes away the chance to prove to ourselves that we can succeed.

‘BY LIMITING OUR AMBITIONS – FOR EXAMPLE, BY WRITING OFF OUR CHANCES OF WINNING AGAINST A STRONGER TEAM – WE’RE BASICALLY SETTING UP A BARRIER FOR OURSELVES. AND WITH SUCH A NEGATIVE MINDSET, IT’S VERY UNLIKELY WE’LL GO BEYOND IT.’
